Paragliding Weight Limit — Can I Fly if I'm Heavy?

Paragliding Weight Limit: What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions we get is: "Am I too heavy to paraglide?" Here's everything you need to know about weight requirements for tandem paragliding.

What Is the Weight Limit?

At Oslob Cebu Paragliding Development (OCPD), the maximum weight for tandem passengers is approximately 100 kg (220 lbs). This limit exists for safety reasons — the paraglider wing has a maximum load capacity that includes both the pilot and passenger.

Why Does Weight Matter?

In paragliding, weight directly affects flight performance:

  • Too heavy — The wing may not generate enough lift for a safe launch and flight. Take-off speed increases and the margin of safety decreases.
  • Too light — Very light passengers (under 30 kg) may experience turbulence differently. Children must be at least 15 years old.
  • Ideal range — Most tandem wings are designed for a combined pilot + passenger weight of 150–220 kg. Since pilots typically weigh 65–85 kg, this leaves room for passengers up to about 100 kg.

What If I'm Close to the Limit?

If you're close to 100 kg, don't worry — our pilots will assess the conditions on the day. Wind speed and direction play a role. On a strong wind day, heavier passengers can fly comfortably. On a calm day, the pilot may need to wait for better conditions.

Other Requirements

  • Age: Must be at least 15 years old
  • Health: Should be in reasonable physical health. Inform the pilot of any conditions (heart problems, back injuries, pregnancy)
  • Shoes: Closed shoes required (sneakers, not sandals)
  • Clothing: Comfortable, not too loose
